Infection Control
The nature of a pandemic is such that, while it
may prove to be global in its effects, it infects one
person at a time. Consequently, the personal
hygiene habits of every individual may determine
whether that individual person contracts or
spreads the illness. It is estimated by some that
each infectious person spreads seasonal
influenza, on average, to approximately 1.5 other
people. It follows, then, that the success of a
single person at avoiding contracting or spreading
the disease through the exercise of effective
personal hygiene habits can have substantial
personal, organizational, and societal impacts.
From a business continuity standpoint, the
results of aggressively promoting personal
hygiene methods can have a profound effect on
the absenteeism rate and the overall effect of the
pandemic on the organization and the community.
The infection control section outlines simple
measures that can be taken individually and
organizationally to mount a defense against the
spread of the disease.
