Vaccines and Antiviral Drugs
A pandemic virus-specific vaccine cannot be
developed until after its emergence. Antiviral
drugs currently in existence may have some
effect on reducing the effects of the flu but will not
cure it. It may take approximately six months to
develop a virus-specific vaccine after its
emergence. Due to a relatively limited production
rate, in addition to a global demand for a vaccine,
federal and state governments have or are
developing prioritized lists of drug recipients for
when they become available. It will be very
important for all to know the pecking order of the
vaccine and antiviral drug recipients to assure
their smooth delivery and administration with
minimal conflict and turmoil.
